Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
1982 to present
What is your primary product or service?
Portrait photography. I throughly enjoy photographing people, making them look good for generations to enjoy. I like to feel that I'm capturing a memory for all time. Being a people-person, I love my chosen profession. Familes are at ease and kids and pets all gravitate to me. Specializing in business, corporate, families, children, pets, maternity, pregnancy, individuals, couples, seniors, groups, musicians, etc.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
B.S. Degree in Art. M.S. Degree from Indiana State Univ. Photography was always an interest of mine since I was a child. After finishing my college degrees, I taught black and white photography at Montgomery College in Rockville for three years. Worked for two large companies as an artist and then as a photographer. I decided to open my studio in Gaithersburg in 1982. I moved my studio to Rockville in 2004. I'm past president of the Maryland Professional Photographers Association,(MPPA). I was on the board of directors for 5 years- sitting thru all the chairs of the board, ending as Chairman of the Board in 1989. Thru the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) I earned my Certification in 1985, Masters Degree 1987 which is the highest degree to be earned based on creativity in photography. Craftsman Degree 1988. I continue to learn more about my art of photography, from others by attending seminars, workshops, classes around the country.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
I'm the best, or at least try to be. Each client will have a consultation where we will discuss exactly what they are looking to achieve. We'll plan the portrait, the clothing, the location, the desired effect. Many times its a brain storming session that lasts 45 minutes to an hour. I'll show them work I've done for other clients and a slide show about clothing. I'm very detail oriented when it comes to the actual portrait session. I want to make everyone look as good as possible. At the same time, I make my clients feel at ease. Laughter is always a part of a session. I try to make the whole experience fun, which also creates a special memory and a wonderful set of portraits. My business portraits are geared towards whom the audience will be. Each business portrait must show that person at his/her best. I accomplish this by first analyzing the face so that I can determine how to put that person in their best light.

One studio location. The rest of the world comprises my outdoor locations.

What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
My most recent complement was from a business portrait. My client left me a voice message saying; "I wanted to give you some feedback;
My husband and daughter are just absolutely speechless. They are just so, so impressed with what you've done. And I think my husband would rather die than give anyone a complement, but he said" it's so impressive, its really worth the money". And my Daughter just keeps going on and on and on about it. "You look beautiful Mom...". I am just so pleased. I'm absolutely thrilled. You captured who I am. It's me. "
